Simple tips and techniques to keep your computer system humming...

Free software, remove hard to delete programs, SPAM reporting to SPAM cop and the FTC
  • Phishing attacks are the most common cause of mischief and denial of service on your humble machine

  • Whether at home or at work you can avoid pitfalls by implementing safety processes and procedures

  • You may get a greeting card with an attachment or a URL that takes you to an area for download

  • Then your operating system will ask you if you are sure you wish to run an executable file

  • As soon as you see a dot exe file asking for you to install that file, shut or cancel the process and fast!

  • Your system will be infected by a virus and these types of infestations are much worse than most others

The reason these programs are so bad is that they are designed, written and deployed in your system as Trojan Horses and many other such spy-ware and viruses that drain your system while feeding your data from various sources to the party that infected you.

Speed up XP Boot Time

What can you do to avoid programs that are almost impossible to uninstall?

Many times you see a program that claims it is a message from Microsoft telling you that your system is infected by this or that virus or spyware. In reality that very program you are seeing is the spyware itself. By allowing the program to install itself in your system you now have to get around their borderline criminal hijacking of your computer with the software that you installed, which you cannot find in the Control Panel > Add Remove Programs area. No matter what you do, if you know how to 'find target' by accessing the shortcut to the problematic program... you still cannot figure out how to get rid of the nasty bugger.

So by simply believing that Microsoft is telling you to install a malicious software product, you got in big trouble. At work you are not likely to get into these situations, because the Sys Admin (administrator) will not allow end users or terminals (local clients) to install anything on the host or server.

Now how do you get rid of the pesky program you cannot even find?

Richard Ackermann of Real Time says: You need to know exactly what the file you are looking for is named. By doing a search on Google you will typically find others in your situation who share your plight. After you find out the name of the files to uninstall, using Google to find data on the wiggly executable program file, you can work to rid yourself of it.

First try to go to the start menu and run a search. For example, once the Windows XP search program opens, you need to ask search to find all files and folders. Then also check the More Advanced Options radio button. Once that opens ask the system to find your desired object in the system or hidden files area.

This search facility in Windows or Vista takes a very long time compared to a product that www.realtimeshoppingmall.com makes available to you, unfortunately, this particular program is not free. However it is worth every penny you spend on it. It finds what you need as you type the name of the desired email message or the file or program you need to locate.

Be careful installing 'free' programs that sound too good to be true...

In reality such too good to be true programs do exist, the question is where are you going to get them; who do you trust? In fact at the foot of this Blog you will find many freebies that rule.

However you really have to know what you are doing when you accept random invitations to install stuff on your computer, no matter who is sending you the greeting card for example, or PayPal message asking for personal information, or emails asking you if you want to earn ridiculous amounts of money. If you need help finding the header of an email just call 718-355-9095 and we will teach you how to do it.

How to report those scam SPAM emails, which forge Gmail and Yahoo mail IDs

  • Free software, remove hard to delete programs, SPAM reporting to SPAM cop and the FTC

Hit REPLY to the email that you suspect is a scam and usually you will see that right away because the reply address has nothing to do with whom they say they are... You must REMOVE the reply address because these criminals can harm your computer if they see you reported them to the government.

How to find email Internet headers in Outlook

  • You MUST include the header and to get that you can do it easily with Outlook, other systems work differently.

In OUTLOOK go to View then Options and at the foot of that window you will see Internet Headers - go to that little area and do a <Ctrl> <A> to select all then <Ctrl> <C> to copy your selection and to send it simply choose reply to the spam email but do not send it just go to the top of the spam mail and <Ctrl> <V> to enter out the selection there.

Then send it to these addresses as well as to for example abuse@yahoo.com - abuse@gmail.com

Use Trend Micro Housecall to remove hard to find and super spyware as well as viruses

Finally we recommend you use Trend Micro Housecall once a month at least. It is free and works very well, however it takes a while so run it while you sleep or after you leave the office.

Your system can be fooled by Trojans, spyware, bots, viruses to think that they are a part of the OS (operating system kernel - the brain of your CPU [central processing unit]). Trend Micro's Housecall unlike your computer anti-virus program, which runs internally, cannot be fooled into thinking that malicious software belongs. The Housecall program runs from their servers to find even the most well hidden problems and reports to you at the end of the scan.

One word of caution... rootkit viruses require special programs to get them out of your system. Go to our comments above about Major Geeks and you will be able to download a rootkit removal program free there.

Have you tried Pandora the free music Internet radio system?

One more text editing tip for you when dealing with problematic codes...

In Word and other programs sometimes you just cannot get rid of certain codes that are hassling you in creating documents.

  1. Select the desired problematic text

  2. Then <Ctrl> <C>

  3. After that open Notepad your text file editor and <Ctrl> <V>

  4. That will remove any and all pesky codes

  5. Then <Ctrl> <A> to grab all the text again (selects all)

Now to bring back clean code into Word, SharePoint Designer / Server or any other program...

  • <Ctrl> <V>

That should save you a lot of time fighting with hidden codes you cannot see that drives you nuts...
